And I really like teaching economics through online dating because it's a context where no money changes hands, and yet so many of the ideas we as economists study are playing out. Paul Oyer teaches economics at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, as well as a research associate with the National Bureau of Economics. He met his girlfriend online dating. Courtesy of Harvard Business Review Press hide caption. A thick market is one with a lot of participants. And so you want your stock markets to be thick because then it'll be easier to trade, there'll be more supply and demand, and we'll have a more efficient market where transactions will be easier and nobody will feel they're getting ripped off.
Now in the online dating world and the job market, it's exactly the same. We want a thick market because we want better matches. And I want to go to one that has a lot of alternatives because I want people who are closer to what I'm looking for. So the gastroenterologist market every year is exactly like the dating market. At the end of a fellowship, a gastroenterologist will go looking for a job.
And there are hospitals out there that are looking for gastroenterologists, so it's a job market that is very much like an online dating site in some ways. Now it's a very thin market. There are just a few hundred — I forget the exact number — gastroenterologists who become available every year. In some years, when supply of gastroenterologists is particularly low, the market breaks down. It's just too thin. And somebody has to come in and fix the market from outside, rather than let supply and demand naturally do it by itself.
Well, I met [my girlfriend] on JDate, and I think my story is actually the exact illustration of why thick markets are so important.
And they might, even given an option, not take it. So I might date somebody a few times and I think, well, you know I can probably find a match that would be a little bit more appropriate. So loneliness in the partner market is basically similar to unemployment in the job market.
And you had some really great examples of everything from Korean dating sites to high end law firms on how people do this, or law clerkships. And so one thing that I found particularly interesting is when an online dating site in Korea stepped in and said, OK, how can we make this market work a little better?
And the way they did that is they use the what an economist would call the idea of signaling. And the way they did was they said, everybody on our site can send invitations for dates to up to a certain number of people, but only two of those people can they also send what they called a virtual rose to. And so now, that put the onus on the people to very carefully think through, well, who do I want to send my virtual roses to? Who do I want to show I really care about you? coms of the world, or LinkedIn, or whoever could do such a thing to allow individuals to have up to one signal to an employer every month or every six months or something like that where they say, hey, I see you have an opening.
I really want to work for your company. So it means something. Because as you were pointing out earlier, how in some ways online dating has made things more efficient. And the same is true of hiring. PAUL OYER: Yeah. Artificial scarcity is a very good way of putting it. I think that can be very valuable. Sometimes when you lower the cost of doing something, you make it too easy.
It saves students a lot of time consuming work in terms of entering data about themselves and writing essays and so forth, because they get shared among all the schools they apply to. Just like if you just send a generic message saying, I really want to meet you. Can you walk us through the rubric there of when it matters more for what kind of candidates and what kind of applicants are applying for what kind of jobs?
So finding a mechanism for that person to be able to signal hey, I really want to work for you can be extremely valuable. Because otherwise, those firms are going to ignore top qualified candidates who might want them.
The online dating example that falls along those lines goes back to the Korean dating site I mentioned. And so it turns out these virtual roses were on average very useful.
But the Korean dating say was able to use various measures to determine who were the most sought after people on their website and who were not as sought after.
Because those happen in relationships and you talked about them in the labor force as well.
In match. com became the first major online-dating site. Today there are hundreds of sites and apps. It has gone from taboo to the thing to do. As co-founder of dating app Tinder and CEO of Bumble, her digital-dating devices have generated 20bn matches. Today around million people use online-dating services all around the world. The Netherlands tops the list with South Korea follows closely behind with In China, one app alone, Momo, has million registered users.
But online dating has enabled people to meet potential partners from further afield. One study by MIT suggests that online dating in America has led to more interracial marriages. The technology has also made it much easier for straight middle-aged people to find love.
Despite the benefits of online dating, there are concerns too. Meeting total strangers is risky. Fake profiles are common and sexual predators can exploit the sites. In Britain, the increase in online dating has gone hand-in-hand with a rise in dating-related crime. Although the numbers are small. Despite the growing popularity of online dating, the majority of straight couples in America still meet through friends.

Online-dating apps Tinder and Bumble have generated 20bn matches around the world. But what impact is this having on society? Some argue the apps are breaking down barriers and changing social norms.
Bumble is an app in which women make the first move. Maybe online love will conquer all?
